CraftArtEdu - Knitting and Crocheting with Beads!

Beaded Beauties Step-by-Step!

Judith Durant has been playing with yarn and thread since her mother taught her how to knit when she was eight years old. She was introduced to beadwork when she worked for Interweave Press, and when she realized there were not enough hours in the day to pursue both passions, she decided to bring the two together -- with stunning results as you can see!

Judith has knitted many projects with beads, and in her latest class, she's crocheting with beads. Judith is truly an amazing teacher and artist!

Enjoy!

New! Bead Crochet Bag with Judith Durant

This craft, crocheting with beads, dates back to the early 19th century! The burgundy bag in this project is 5" wide, 4" tall and has a 7" handle that slips over the wrist. It is crocheted back and forth in one piece, and seamed up the sides. Increasing the number of beads between the stitches creates the darling flared shape. Judith includes lots of tips such as dealing with kinky thread, and adding beaded picot fringe!

Knitting with Beads with Judith Durant

By making this gorgeous little sampler purse, you will learn five distinct, fun techniques to add beaded beauty to your knitted items! As you can see, you will be creating heirlooms to give as gifts or to keep for yourself.
  1. The first technique, Bead Knitting, dates to at least the mid-19th century, and was popular with Victorian era knitters.
  2. With Beaded Knitting, the bead (or beads) lies on the thread between two stitches. This technique allows you to shape your knitted piece.
  3. Slip Stitch Bead Knitting leaves a bead (or beads) floating on top of a slip stitch or stitches. Beads can be placed randomly or in a pattern, and are prestrung on to the knitting yarn.
  4. With Carry-Along Bead Knitting, you string beads on to a separate thread that you carry along with your main yarn, which allows you to use beads that are too small to thread onto your knitting yarn. You can also use large beads with this method.
  5. Add beads to individual stitches with the Hook Bead Knitting technique. No pre-stringing is necessary, saving wear and tear on delicate yarn.

Add these five techniques to your knitting toolbox, and you'll be able to add beads to all of your knitting projects, turning them into intricate works of art!
